BERYL

CHANGING THE WAY CITIES MOVE. A BETTER WORLD THROUGH BIKES

Beryl builds a better world by getting more people in cities on bikes. Our challenge was to help design and build the React Native app that was used in the initial trials of Beryl's bike sharing service.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND BERYL?

Beryl started its operations in 2012 with the creation of the urban cycling products, that have been adopted by key bike share schemes in London, New York, and Montreal. Then Beryl launched their own bike share scheme.

The purpose of Beryl is to tackle the barriers of urban cycling and improve the cities for all.

Thanks to the Beryl app in London, Bournemouth & Pool and Hereford. You can easily use bikes in 4 simple steps: find and unlock the bike, ride, park and lock it.

GOAL & CHALLENGE
The goal was to create from scratch an easily scalable application in React Native that could be used by hundreds of thousands of people at the same time. React Native and minor native enhancements (especially in NFC technology) have allowed us to build an app that works on all devices, from low-end to high-end smartphones.

Although there are already a lot of bikes rental services on the market, our goal was to create a much easier and more intuitive solution that would simplify the process of bike share and its use to a minimum.

The challenge was to consider all possible use cases that may occur when using bicycles that are either available at stations or available as stand-alone bikes.
„I am more than happy that we could create with Untitled Kingdom the design and the entire app that was used in the initial trials and final version of Beryl's bike-sharing service. We are extremely pleased with the work their team did and they were a joy to cooperate!”

PROCESS & EFFECT
The application development process was planned in a few steps, combining the forces of an interdisciplinary team consisting of our product & software development experts and design and UX specialists on the Beryl side.

We also used our extensive web experience in React Native to build a mature architecture to develop further features on the side of Beryl's growing in-house team.

1.

Discovery Workshops

We started our work with a four-day workshop where we developed the whole service design, considered all possible use cases and planned implementation.

2.

User-Bike-City scheme

An important element of the work was to design all the schemes of using the solution by the user and his interaction with the city and bicycle.

3.

Maps & design

We used maps provided by Mapbox. We worked closely with a team of designers and UX specialists on the Beryl side on the look and feel of the app.

4.

Web & mobile app development

We decided together to choose React Native and not native solutions to build a functional prototype available for the widest possible range of users.

5.

Scalability and usability

We are most proud to create an app that is easily scalable and much simpler to use for the customer than the solutions available on the market.
